The title itself got me all curious that I just had to look for it. Be-Boy Kidnappin’ Idol is a 25-minute mini-movie of yaoi anime nature and is released by Toshiba EMI. Though many other reviews describe this as a cute yaoi OVA to watch, I found it a little disappointing yet at the same time admirable in terms of the dialogue and the animation. BL or boy love content is very, very mild here with only touching, hints of admiration, and kissing between characters.
Created by Kazumi Ohya, it’s a romance story that revolves around the experiences of a music artist being kidnapped by an unknown executive producer, in which the singer was rescued by his lover and surprisingly, the producer’s henchman. It is a short story comprised of love and lust between couples connected with one another. 16-year old singer Kazuya has tons of fans, a growing music career, but who is childish and who loves to play video games. His companion, a more serious and violent character, is Akihiko. Together they go to school, share apartment rooms, and Akihiko even fetches Kazuya in his motorbike. They have a cute and funny relationship together, which I found very amusing, but do encounter arguments with one another. Later on, the two eventually had a big fight, which eventually led to Akihiko confessing to his best friend his hidden intimate feelings for him.
The love story doesn’t end here when Kazuya was kidnapped by a creepy executive producer and his henchman/employee, both who are unnamed all throughout the movie. Kazuya is kidnapped and forced to make a new record under the producer’s company, though this is merely a set up just so he could make lusty advances on Kazuya. In the end, Akihiko manages to save Kazuya with the help of his admirer, the producer’s tough, muscular employee.
Going to the technical side, the animation wasn’t that bad and the script was quite entertaining. The character design for Kazuya was a very typical uke design with his light skin and brown hair as well as the seme Akihiko with dark skin and black hair. For the cinematography, the transition of scenes was easy to understand, all though the dullness of the plot and storyline made the entire creative aspect a very wasted effort. In my opinion, the story was entirely cliché except for the kidnapping part, which could have been a great and unique twist to the story. The creator would have to improve a lot more on conceptualization in the future if he wants to create more yaoi OVAs.
Though the dialogues between Kazuya and Akihiko were not that bad, I still expected more from Be-Boy Kidnappin’ Idol since the story had a twist, which would have made it an interesting addition to a normal yaoi fan’s collection. A lot of viewers wouldn’t have to worry though about this OVA being too vulgar and sexual since all there is to the BL content is mere touching, confessions of love, perverted looks and kissing.
